EMail Communication

Telecare/TeleNurse

Registered nurses are available 24 hours, 7 days a week and on holidays to answer medical advice questions. This service is provided to increase veteran access to healthcare advice and education and to help the patient avoid unnecessary hospital or clinic visits. During regular business hours of 8:00 am to 4:30 pm, Monday through Friday, Telecare is also able to assist in making changes to primary care clinic appointments.

Public Transportation

Dallas VAMC is served by a DART light rail station.   Check www.dart.org external link will open in new window for schedules.

Bonham Shuttle Bus

Shuttle buses donated by veteran service organizations transport veterans between Dallas VA Medical Center (VAMC) and Sam Rayburn Memorial Veterans Center (SRMVC).

Buses depart from Sam Rayburn Memorial Veterans Center in Bonham at 7:00 a.m. and 11:00 a.m. Monday - Friday.  Veterans with appointments at Dallas VAMC are given priority seating.  Buses arrive back in Bonham at approximately 3:00 p.m. and 6:00 p.m.

Valet Parking
 

Valet parking is available free of charge to patients or visitors who have handicapped parking tags and need special assistance. The service is available at the main entrance of the Clinical Addition between the hours of 7:00 a.m. and 1:00 p.m., Monday through Friday.

 

Parking Designations

  • Reserved parking is available for patients, family, and friends in Lot 1, other undesignated parking areas are available.
  • Patients preferring wheelchair assistance or escort services should go the Main Entrance/Clinical Addition where assistance staff is available.
  • Patients enrolled in the Spinal Cord Injury Clinic may make arrangements for reserved parking in Lot 19 through the VA Medical Center's office of Paralyzed Veterans.

Shuttles

Shuttle service is available to take passengers to patient and visitor parking.  It is located at the main patient entrance and is available from 7:00 a.m - 5:30 p.m., Monday - Friday.

Smoking Policy

For the comfort and safety of our patients, smoking is only allowed in four designated areas of the Medical Center:

  • Smoking shelter between Buildings 1 and 3
  • Smoking shelter in Transitional Care Unit
  • Smoking shelter in the Spinal Cord Injury Center Courtyard

Visiting Hours and Policies

The staff of the VA North Texas Health Care System encourages family and friends to visit.  Visitors may be asked to interrupt or delay visitation for brief periods when medical procedures are in progress.   Visiting hours for specific areas are as follows:

Medical/Surgical Units
8:00 a.m. - 10:00 p.m.
Mental Health Units
3 South/3 North
3:30 p.m. - 8:30 p.m. Monday - Friday
11:30 a.m. - 8:30 p.m. Weekends and Holidays

5 North/South
Visitation is arranged by the patient on an individual basis when patient is not attending class.
Homeless Domiciliary - 4 South
3:30 p.m. - 8:30 p.m.
Intensive Care Units
MICU/CCU/SICU/TICU
Open visitation at the discretion of the nurse manager, 2 visitors at a time unless otherwise authorized
Urgent Care

One ten-minute period, every hour, on the hour, no more than 1 visitor at a time

 

Other visitor guidelines:

  • Visitors may not bring food or beverages to patients without authorization from the patient’s physician or nurse.
  • Children may be permitted to visit based on the needs of the patient and/or family.  Please check with the nurse in charge of the unit for guidance.
  • Members of the clergy may visit other than the regular visiting hours at the discretion of the physician or nurse in charge.

Lost and Found

Lost and Found is located in room 1A-206, Building 2J near the main entrance of the Clinical Addition.  You may also contact them at extension 70985.

Security

VA North Texas has a Police Service. Our officers provide 24-hour patrols of the facility and parking lots. For general police assistance, please dial 70411. Federal Officers are available in Dallas. In case of an emergency, dial 911. Report all suspicious or criminal activity, vehicle accidents, and personal property losses while on the facility grounds to the VA Police as soon as possible.

Because the VA Medical Center is federal property, all persons and bags are subject to search. In addition, no weapons, alcohol, or illegal drugs are permitted.

Guest House

Housing rooms in the Dallas facility Guest House (Building 2, 9th Floor) are available on a short-term basis for immediate family members and/or caretakers of hospitalized veterans who primarily reside outside the Dallas/Fort Worth metropolitan area.  Family members from the local area may use the guest house on a space available basis. Occupancy by family members of hospitalized veterans will be limited to two nights unless unusual circumstances warrant an extension.

Individuals interested in using the Guest House facilities should contact the hospitalized veteran's assigned social worker for more information about eligibility and availability of lodging.  (During evening hours, weekends, and holidays when the social worker may not be on duty, the Administrative Officer of the Day will assist family members with Guest House requests.)

Veterans Canteen Service (Food, Beverages, and Retail Store)

The food court and a vending area is located in the Basement of Building 2.  The vending area is open twenty-four hours.  Vending machines are also available in each building.  The retail store is located in the One VA Mall on the first floor of Building 2, along with Cafe VA and Starbucks/Sweets & Java.

  • Pay Phones - Two pay phones are available near the main entrance of the Clinical Addition.

  • Patient Phones - Convenient bedside telephones are available to all acute and extended care patients in Units 8A, 7A, 7B, 6C, 5B, 4C, Telemetry, CCU, MICU, SICU, TICU, Geriatric & Transitional Care Unit and the Spinal Cord Injury Unit. Upon admission, veterans will be assigned their own telephone number for convenient calling to friends and loved ones.
